What is SUPYoga

SUPYoga is a rapidly growing form of yoga that combines the basics of StandUp Paddling and Hatha Yoga along with elements of Vinyasa flow.  Yoga and Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) just happen to go together very well. Doing yoga on a paddleboard enhances the yoga workout. The paddleboard makes a fine yoga mat and the extra balance required by being on the water intensifies the yoga routine. The peacefulness and tranquility of floating on the water combines nicely with the meditative nature of yoga.

What can I expect ?

Goodwave Adventures in association with our experienced Hatha yoga instructors introduces SUP Yoga for the first time in India.  In this exciting & unique clinic spread over two days, we teach you the basics of Standup paddling interspersed with 2 x 1.5 hour long Yoga sessions.

Your certified SUP Yoga teacher will guide you through a practice that starts slowly, letting you get used to the floating surface. You will then move into a more dynamic flow before slowing down to cool off with restorative postures and the greatest Savasana you’ve ever experienced (truly!).  Let yourself be enchanted by the fairy-tale setting of the beautiful Manchanbelle reservoir surrounded by a clear blue skies, under the shadow of the majestic Savandurga and the beautiful green valley.

Course Contents & Itinerary

Day 01

After a quick round of introductions and safety briefing we start with introducing the basics of Standup Paddling Boarding and being able to balance and effectively control your standup paddle board.  We teach you the forward and reverse paddling draws, turning strokes and different board stances such kneeling, neutral and surf.  You will also learn how to fall-off and get back on the SUP, this is an important skill which you will need to practise a few times.

One hour before sunset we will kickstart your SUPYoga experience with a lesson in aparigraha, meaning non-possessiveness: On the water, one has to let go of any control or wanting to do everything perfectly because at any moment, the current can change everything, and you'll be in the water. Walk (read swim) into our SUPYoga class looking forward to practising, ready to move and breathe our way towards a more peaceful mind. We will practice seated asanas that create awareness of the paddle board and the balance that is needed to stay on it. A simple everyone can do class which gets you enthused about the next session.

Day 02

Your second day on the water and you will now be a lot more confident on the SUP so today is the day that we will challenge you. We will start with a warm up routine by doing short SUP tour around this beautiful reservoir. This will have you jump-start quickly and get your blood flowing to all parts of your body in preparation for your 2nd SUP Yoga session.

Sup Yoga - Horsing Around-7.jpg

Practicing yoga can be demanding on the body, but ideally we should practice regularly no matter how we feel on a given day. At our SUPYoga practice, we take Tapas, which is self discipline, seriously. Hence, we will base the first practice of the day on standing poses like Tadasana (mountain) and Veerabhadhra (warrior) series. By the end of this session, you should be easily balancing on the paddle board. If not, remember Aparigraha from the first lesson!

What do I wear

We suggest wearing a comfortable bathing suit that you will feel supported in while practicing SUP yoga. A great rule of thumb is to practice a Sun Salutation in your outfit of choice to ensure all body parts stay put when moving  Other options are swim shirts, shorts, or whatever you feel comfortable wearing to protect you from the sun. If you wish to wear a hat or sunglasses, please make sure they will stay snug and secure during the times that you fall off from your board. You will be facing away from the sun throughout the class, so you don’t need to worry about looking into it.

Can Beginners Join ?

Beginners and non-swimmers are welcome. Each participant will be provided with a life-jacket and safety leash. Also each SUP will have an anchor so that the board stays stable in the water.

About the Instructor - Smitha Adhyam

Sup Yoga-27.jpg

After years of practicing yoga on her own, Smitha became a certified yoga instructor, having trained in Hatha with A1000Yoga and Ashtanga Vinyasa with Bharath Shetty at IndeaYoga, Mysore. Her fear of water drove her to learn how to swim and now she has combined her two passions to create a SUP Yoga session in collaboration with Good Wave Kayak . The SUP session helps in creating balance by allowing one to find one's center both physically and mentally. This, of course, is just another step in her bigger plan, to align her center of gravity with the Earth's magnetic field.
