Course Information

This course for paddlers who have successfully completed the LTK and LTR-Into courses and is designed to take them to next level of progression.  The focus of this course will be on learning the river-roll and other two most important aspects of river running, i.e ferry-glides and playing with eddies. The basic idea is to get our students comfortable on all aspects moving water along including being upside down and breathing under water :).

This course will be held on Hogenakkal Section of the Cauvery which is located about 120 kilometers from Bangalore.  This section offers a few high-volume class II rapids with lots of flat sections in between those rapids and that make it ideal for someone who is looking to step up and sharpen their river running skills.

Day 1 (6 hours)

On the first day of the course we start off by revisiting the skills that you have learnt during the LTK and the LTR-into. The main focus will be on river roll and getting one oriented to being upside down in the kayak but at the same time being in control of the situation. We will go over the following aspects of river kayaking on Day 1

  • River safety protocol
  • Swimming in the river
  • Forward paddling, turning strokes and edge control
  • Assisted rescue and initiation of the river roll technique
  • Practice being upside down in the kayak in gentle flowing water

Day 2 (6 hours)

Tn this session you will be taught to negotiate currents and we will introduce you to handling your kayak in moving water. You will be taught the different white water kayaking skills that are essential to maneuver the kayak down the river.  We intend to cover the following

  • River Reading (understanding of downstream and upstream Vs)
  • Peeling In and Out of eddies
  • The art of ferry gliding (Using the downstream current to cross from one side of the river to another)

The last 3 hours of this session we we will once again revisit the rolling techniques and put you in situations where you will be made to attempt the roll both in flat and moving water. If time permits we make a run down the river catching many eddies and practicing ferry glides along the way
